Shawn K. Fry has always had an active imagination. Growing up in rural Idaho, he spent countless hours exploring the outdoors, catching frogs and snakes, and developing a fascination with reptiles. His childhood dream was to become a herpetologist, a passion that eventually led him to earn a Master of Science in Biology, where he studied rattlesnakes and endangered iguanas.

His path later took him into the U.S. Army, where he served for twenty years before retiring as a Captain. The discipline, leadership, and resilience he gained through military service continue to influence his writing, particularly the themes of survival, courage, and responsibility found throughout Portal.
